This is the story of Lars Lindstrom, a shy, awkward, emotionally damaged young man who lives in the garage behind the house of his brother, Gus and his sister-in-law Karin. Much to their excitement, Lars announces that he has a new girlfriend. Much to their horror – he introduces her to them and she is Bianca, a sex doll ordered from an adult website. You would think this synopsis means this a very crude movie. But the movie never goes there. It’s actually more interested in exploring the themes of loneliness and relationship. Where a lot of the off-beat comedy comes from is watching how his family and the small town community respond to Lars who they genuinely care for, and to Bianca, who Lars truly believes is real.
What I found interesting about the movie is that it makes the viewer think about relationships. It makes us realise afresh that relationships truly matter, that we need relationships, and we’re reminded of something we know at the core of us – loneliness is not good. Relationship is what all of us were made for. At creation God said, ‘It is not good for man to be alone’. (Genesis 2:18). The end of the movie shows an awakening of sorts for Lars – an understanding that only real people provide real relationship. The message of the bible is that relationship is what life is all about. The bible tells us how we can have real satisfying relationships with people, and what is more wonderful – it tells us how we can have a real satisfying relationship with God.
